Sammy spends his days keeping Joe company as they tend to thousands of lilies and hostas in Joe’s greenhouses and outdoor beds. Sammy loves being outdoors in warm weather and has learned to be careful around the gardens. He is smart and eager to please as is evidenced by how he respectfully follows the footpaths and never tramples young plants or disturbs the soft mulchy beds. He walks where Joe walks. Although athletic and fit, he loves snatching rides in the wheelbarrow where he is master of all he surveys.
When the weather is colder, both Sammy and Joe prefer to spend their time in the greenhouses, where Sammy has been known to rummage through stacks of empty pots until finding one just the right size for a cozy nap.
When all the bulbs are packed and labeled for shipping Sammy eagerly jumps into the cab of Joe’s truck for a ride to the local post office and if he’s lucky, the gas station, where they give out free dog biscuits. Sometimes they run other errands where Sammy enjoys riding in shopping carts at stores where dogs are welcome. But Sammy's favorite trip is when he and Joe stop by my house so Sammy can visit with his girlfriends. He likes that even better than the gas station.
In the evenings after they share a hearty supper, Sammy likes to curl up in Joe’s lap while Joe reads by the fire or emails customers over the internet. At 14.5 pounds he is the perfect size for Joe's lap. Then when the fire dies out, it’s off to bed where Sammy sleeps under the covers in the winter and on top in the summer. At Joe’s house Sammy lives like a king.
